ABOUT LUPUS
Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints and/or organs inside the body). Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from foreign substances, like bacteria and viruses. With lupus, your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body's healthy tissues and creates autoantibodies ("auto" means "self") to attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.
Lupus is also a disease of flares (the symptoms worsen and you feel ill) and remissions (the symptoms improve and you feel better). Lupus can be mild or serious but should always be treated by a doctor. With good medical care, most people with lupus can lead a full life.
WHO STARTED IT ALL
MRS. SHAUNDA ANDERSON
Shaunda Anderson has a personal commitment to the organization. She began volunteering her time in support of her daughter who is battling with Lupus Nephritis and SLE.
August 2008 her daughter fell ill, doctors were unable to identify the issue. It wasn't until January 2009 that they received the Lupus diagnosis. After many visits attempting to identify the health issue she began to realize there was a lack of support for the Lupus community. It was at that moment she felt a Lupus Support Group was need in her community.
Once her daughter condition stabilized, she began investing time in educating the community. She did not want anyone to face the stresses she faced while attempting to receive a diagnosis for her daughter.
She created Lupus Flare Fighters to provide informational, educational, and financial support to individuals living and loving life with Lupus. She decided to use uplifting ways to raise funds through walks, fashion shows, comedy shows, and any other project that involves love and laughter.
